Fiona Thomson - MA (hons), MFA

I am a Scottish Artist working from my studio in rural Aberdeenshire. I have an MA (hons) degree from Aberdeen University and a post-graduate MFA degree from Gray's School of Art at the Robert Gordon University. My thesis was titled “What is it to paint a dog? Dog Art and the contextual position of the Dog Image”. My fascination with painting dogs continues to be a focal point of my practice. I currently have four dogs: two older whippets Friday and Meadow, and Italian Greyhounds Aria and Fingal. I have had dogs for nearly 40 years and have previously competed at Crufts and in Obedience.
I exhibit my work throughout the UK and my paintings are in collections in the UK and Overseas. In 2021 my painting 'Perch: Alastair and Aria' was long-listed for the Scottish Portrait Awards. I have also exhibited at Bonhams in Edinburgh, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Battersea Art Fair in London. In 2017 I won the 'Robert Fountain Best Original Print Award' at the Society of Equestrian Artists for a drypoint etching of a Shetland Pony.
I predominantly work in Oils and Watercolour but also have extensive experience with various Printmaking techniques, illustration and photography. I love to see the texture of paint and use energetic brush-strokes to keep my paintings impressionistic and lively. I go use 'likeness' to examine essence of form and the captivating presence of my subjects.
